The line between art and technology has been completely blurred with one daring, Dutch project called ‘The Next Rembrandt‘. A team of historians, software developers and engineers successfully created a painting in Rembrandt’s style using a computer and not a single human intervention. The final result is hard to distinguish from the original works of the painter.

During 18 months, analysts studied about 300 paintings made by Rembrandt using 3D scanning to finally create an algorithm that acould allow them to recreate his style. Then, they used a 3D printer to create the painting above, of a 17th century man, using 13 layers of paint-based UV ink.

Instead of hundreds of human strokes, the final painting was made up of 148 million pixels, based on more than 160,000 fragments from the original works of art. #softwaremagic

If you’re wondering what is the purpose of this project, rest assured, it’s definitely not finding a way to forge Rembrandt’s paintings. “Next Rembrandt” is a an advertising campaign for ING Bank that explores innovation in art.
