Renault teamed up once again with Central Saint Martins college to brainstorm new ideas for autonomous vehicles. The competition challenged participants to come up with designs for a futuristic, autonomous car. A spherical, called The Float, won #automagic

Yuchen Cai came up with the best design of an autonomous car, the Renault jury decided. Its vehicle, The Float, was chosen for its inspired use of Maglev technology and Sci-Fi design. Indeed, the vehicle looks nothing like a car (if you ignore the two passenger seats).

It’s made up of two spheres that are connected and can be further extended via magnetic belt. The vehicle is non-directional, meaning it can move in any direction, as the environment requires it.

The designer thought of transparent glass and silver seats to make it not only more futuristic but also a social space. Yuchen Cai though of tessellation as a way of connecting passengers with the outside world. As for interaction between passengers… this can be done easily through a special sound system, believes the inventor.

Now, all that’s left is for Renault to put this concept in production.
