Google has announced that it will be making a bit of a change to its Photos service: since December 6th, videos in unsupported formats are no longer included in the free storage agreement so any videos uploaded in an unsupported format will now be occupying storage space.
But don’t worry – it’s unlikely your storage will be hitting red any time soon, unless you’re using or have been uploading videos from high-end cameras in VOB or RAW formats.
Google Photos is fairly accommodating because it supports a long list of videos files free for storage: .mpg, .mod, .mmv, .tod, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .divx, .mov, .m4v, .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m2t, .m2ts, .mts, and even .mkv files so most users will probably not be affected by the change in the slightest.
However, if you do use the excluded formats more often than the rest of us, you always have the option of paying a little and use Google One instead.
