Elon Musk Offers To Build Future CERN Particle Collider Tunnel

It was just last week that we were telling you about CERN’s plans to build a new particle accelerator which would dwarf the current Large Hadron Collider (LHC), as it would have a 63-mile structure. By comparison, the LHC currently measures 16.6 miles all around.

It seems like Elon Musk was also approached about CERN’s project and, responding to a tweet about it from MIT Technology Review, he wrote that “Director of CERN asked me about Boring Co building the new LHC tunnel when we were at the @royalsociety. Would probably save several billon Euros.”

CERN is, indeed, expected to spend around 5 billion Euro ($5.6 billion) on the civil engineering for the tunnel but, according to Musk, he’d cut down those costs by using his Boring Company to build the tunnel. It’s hard to say if the company could handle the load though – so far, its only claim to fame is the 1.14 mile tunnel in Los Angeles.

The new tunnel would be ready for operation sometime around 2040 though – CERN is still looking for approvals and funding, which will further delay the project, so that should give Elon Musk more than enough time to gain some tunnel-digging experience.
