Artist Makes Weird, Furry Mirror To Capture Your Soul

We’ve always loved watching our expression in the mirror – during make-up, shaving, while styling our hair and arranging our clothes. Heck, when the mirror was not enough, we came up with a way to show others what our reflection – hello, selfies! Artist Daniel Rozin thinks though, that a mirror should reflect more than just your outer shell and, therefore, created an interactive one #objectmagic

His mechanical mirror made of pompoms debuted last year at bitforms gallery in New York City. Since then, it has mesmerized those who have seen it on the Internet. The mechanical pentagon is filled with 928 faux-fur puffs, in black and white, that move with you in a synchronized manner. Every pair (black and white) is attached to a motor that pushes one pom forward while the other one retracts, like a beautiful dance.

The mirror knows when you’re in front of it thanks to a Kinect camera that captures your movement and transmits it to Rozin’s software. While your facial features can’t be seen in the mirror, your gestures and body language is accurately reflected. “Hopefully it captures your soul, not your detail.”, explains Rozin.

The artist talks about his invention like an interactive object, although you might argue it’s only reflecting what you do. But once you start using it, you’ll see that the poms make you instinctively move slower and choose your future actions deliberately, to which Rozin poses a good question: “Who is controlling whom?”
