Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, is convinced it can send people to Mars in the next decade, even before NASA. If everything goes to plan, people will put a foot on the Red Planet in 2025 #todaymagic
Musk can’t guarantee anything of course, but if his calculations are correct, SpaceX will be able to send people on this extraterrestrial journey in 2024 and one year later, help them to settle there. He won’t stay behind, either, hinting that the rest of his days could be spend on other place than Earth: “I think if you’re going to choose a place to die, then Mars is probably not a bad choice.”
At his recent talk for Recode‘s Code Conference, Musk added that he will detail his plans in September, at the International Astronautical Congress in Mexico. Next year, he will be focused on SpaceX’s Dragon Version 2. The updated cargo capsule is the one that will take not just supplies to ISS, but also people in 2018, the year when tests on Mars will start:
“Dragon 2 is a propulsive lander as well, and it’s intended to carry astronauts to the space station, but it’s also capable of being a general science delivery platform to anywhere in the Solar System,” explained the CEO.
