Star Wars’ return to the cinema didn’t inspire just dozens of memes and a May the Forth day, but also one American automotive company. Ford took inspiration from George Lucas’ saga when it designed the look of its 2018 Mustang. Darth Vader, in particular, gave the car a particular badass vibe #automagic
If you felt the 2018 Mustang looked more edgy than never and even downright aggressive, you’re a pretty shrewd person. The truth is this car was born to take the highway since its design was inspired by none other than our favorite villain, Darth Vader. That bit of news comes straight from Ford’s design manager Melvin Betancourt, who discussed the matter with Autoblog:
“When we were designing the new 2018 Mustang, the team wanted to make the new model look more aggressive, and one place where we found inspiration was one of the most famous screenplay villains of all time,” Betancourt said. “The angled nostrils and contours of Darth Vader’s mask became the inspiration for the Mustang’s new fog lamp scoops and front-end shape.”
The similarity is not as striking as you might think since, well, we’re not dealing with a 2018 Mustang Star Wars Special Edition or anything. It’s not a toy that reflects the movie’s theme and Darth Vader’s costume. Rather, it’s an integration of some of the interesting details found in Vader’s mask and helmet. The angled headlights look pretty menacing while the grille below borrows the shape of Vader’s triangular one.
That said, the new Mustang keeps the company’s own distinctive features and design, making it an unmistakable Ford. If you’re interested in the car’s specs, go here for more information.
