LG has revealed in a press release that its upcoming LG G8 ThinQ will use a feature called “Crystal Sound OLED” (CSO), which will turn the screen into a speaker.

According to LG, by using the screen much in the same way the human body uses the diaphragm, the device should deliver a much clearer audio and a better bass when compared to other smartphones.

The device won’t deliver sound just through the screen, though; it will also feature speakers on the back, which will help the CSO achieve stereo surround sound.

“Our commitment to driving smartphone audio to new heights is on clear display in LG G8 ThinQ. By developing new technologies as well as working closely in partnership with the audio industry’s best partners, LG will continue to deliver the quality of sound that consumers demand and deserve.”

– Chang Ma, Senior Vice President and Head of Product Strategy for LG Electronics

LG also mentions a “boombox speaker” that takes advantage of the internal space of the phone as a resonance chamber, as well as Quad DAC Hi-Fi. Moreover, for the first time on an LG phone, users will get DTS:X 3D Surround Sound, a technology that is able to emulate a 7.1-channel system with or without earphones.

The phone will be fully revealed during the MWC 2019, on February 24th.
