It looks like, in spite of rumors, LG doesn’t have any plans to release a foldable smartphone, at least not for the time being, and will choose to focus on bringing 5G network services to its future devices instead.

LG has achieved technological innovation in the smartphone business for years but also witnessed market failure.” Kwon Bong-seok, President of LG Electronics was quoted as saying. “As there is a market expectation that 5G network will become an opportunity to grow the smartphone business, we will try to release a higher quality 5G smartphone to lead the market.

LG did admit that the company had been and would continue to work on a foldable handset, though even then, former mobile CEO Hwang Jeong-hwan said that the company wasn’t rushing in to be the first on the market to release a foldable device, leaving that spot in history to rivals like Samsung or Huawei and wanting to learn from their mistakes instead.

During the Consumer Electronics Show in January, LG introduced a rollable TV. This is an advanced technology one step ahead of foldable technology. We have reviewed releasing the foldable smartphone when launching 5G smartphone but decided not to produce it,” Kwon stated.
