Fujifilm’s Instax Square SQ10 Is The Perfect Blend Of Digital And Film

An instant film camera with digital perks? It’s more than possible, folks – it’s here. The Fujifilm Instax Square SQ10 camera rumored a week ago was officially announced this week. Can film and digital work things out and offer a unified, make-sense experience? Let’s see #fotomagic

As the name suggests, Fujifilm’s latest instant camera shoots in Instagram’s square format. From the 86mm x 72mm film you need for it, you’ll obtain 62mm x 62mm pictures. Usually, Instax photos come at 46mm x 62mm so there’s a lot to win in that respect. Another win is the digital controls this camera brings. Instax Square SQ10 has a 3.7-megapixel digital sensor for photos that can be instantly shot and printed, but also stored on its microSD card. This could take some of the fun associated with such cameras, prompting you to be more careless when taking photos. Like with many things in this world, there’s a silver lining here, too: you won’t waste film anymore. By shooting more and then deciding which shot is worth printing, you’ll get more out of your instant camera.

The digital “innovations” for this type of cam don’t end there. Thanks to a 3-inch LCD screen located on the back of the camera, you won’t be shooting in “darkness”. This time around, you’ll be able to actually frame your shots for a more cohesive album or other DIY projects. Are there any improvements in terms of lens and photo processing? The answer is yes. SQ10 comes with a 28.5mm-equivalent f/2.4 autofocus lens which means photos in low light will look better.

Plus, you have the option to adjust the brightness and vignette post-capture from a big camera dial positioned on the back of the device, under the LCD screen. From there, you can also choose one of ten different filters to apply to your photos before printing. That’s probably the digital cherry on top of this instant camera.

Last week, FujiRumors mentioned the release of two Instax Square cameras, with the other one being a standard, film one with square format. Unfortunately, the company hasn’t said anything about it so far, meaning it might not make it to the market after all. Until then, keep your eyes on this hybrid cam. SQ 10 is going to become available next month for $279.95 with 10-packs of film set to sell for $16.99.
