Sony is serious about its 16K displays – even as far back as 2014, the company has designed a display that was placed at the Tokyo Haneda Airport and, though it was not on par with the display we currently have available, it still caused a stir.
But that display would shudder in fear at the sight of Sony’s next project: a 16k screen that has four times as many horizontal pixels as a 4K one and eight times that of your regular 1080HD TV.
“We’re moving slowly towards 8K TVs at the end of the decade and who knows how long it will take to get beyond that, so 16K is likely to be limited to the corporate world for the time being,” David Mercer from Strategy Analytics said “But there’s no doubt about it. These displays are incredibly impressive in person – even 8K on a big display is almost mesmerizing. When you get to this resolution it delivers almost a quasi-virtual reality experience as your eyes perceive there to be depth to the content.“
The screen, built with MicoLED technology that carry Sony’s Crystal LED brand name, will measure 63ft by 17ft (19.2m by 5.4m) and is currently being installed at a beauty research center in Yokohama.
The screen was built for famous Japanese cosmetics company Shiseido and, since we only have a handful of 16K footage available out there, Sony created a customized film for the company, which apparently will showcase animal wildlife, in their real sizes.
The screen is so big it will stretch out on both the first and second floor of the Shiseido’s building.
