Video games movie are an interesting marriage to say the least; both categories of entertainment work well separately, but when paired together, it is a hit or miss. But given the enormous popularity of gaming, it’s hard to not push for more gaming-related entertainment.
One of the most recently announced game-to-movie adaption is Borderlands. Borderlands follows a group of “Vault Hunters” who are in search of the secret Vaults filled with treasure on Pandora. Each game is built. Each game is a looter-shooter, focusing largely on fast action-based shooting and collecting massive amounts of weapons and other loot.
AV Club has reported that Cate Blanchett is in talks to play Lilith. Lilith has been a playable character since the first game of the series and a fan favorite. As one of only six Sirens (females with incredible powers) known, Lilith’s supernatural abilities and central role in the Borderlands games could lead Blanchett to be a central figure within the movie adaption. However, details surrounding the movie remain unclear.
Two other recent movies/TV series based on video games, The Witcher and Sonic the Hedgehog, illustrate the difficulties and rewards of making video game adaptions. The Witcher hasn’t had the critical acclaim the video game has, but it also inspired a huge surge of new Witcher 3 gamers. Sonic the Hedgehog movie, on the other hand, faced huge controversy because of the original character design. After it was fixed and the movie released, most commentators have been lukewarm about it; the movie was alright, but not great.
