The Hardest Interchange To Tackle By Autonomous Cars

Autonomous cars are the brainiacs of the vehicle world. They are capable to drive without a human behind the wheel by understanding the road ahead, avoiding obstacles and respecting traffic rules humans even disregard. This makes the autonomous technology priceless to us – it ensures safe, quick and hassle-free journeys. Unless, these cars come to an interchange like the one opened in Chongqing, China. With eight different directions to follow, it’s bound to give headaches to human, experienced drivers, not to mention driverless cars #automagic

After eight years of work, China has almost completed the most complex interchange project of the country, maybe the world. Located in Chongqing, the web-like intersection has five layers, 20 ramps and allows drivers to pursue eight different directions. It’s meant to link the 8 million residents of Chongqing with various parts of the city and the airport. Although it’s one of the scariest roads to follow, especially if you’re a tourist, officials believe it shouldn’t make your life harder: “Even if you take the wrong way, then you only have to go around one kilometer or even just five or six hundred meters before there is an option to correct the wrong turn”.

Besides these fail-safes, constructors have added frequent signs to point drivers in the right direction. They also tested a couple of navigation devices and, believe it or not, they work perfectly.

The public will have to check this maze out next year, though. There is still one unfinished part – the airport expressway. Even then, if you decide to embrace your daredevil side, try not to look down as the top most level is situated 12 stories from the ground. At least when autonomous cars will be faced with this challenge, they will have one less thing to worry about: fear of heights.
