ARM is bound to have a busy year. The company has just acquired imaging firm Apical for for $350 million in cash in order to further support their projects in markets such as robotics, smart cities and Internet of Things (IoT) #todaymagic
The acquision is certainly going to do more than that if we take into account the fact that Apical products are in billions of smartphones and other millions of digital still cameras and tablets; ARM has calculated its move very well, knowing it has chosen the best to increase its presence in these existing markets, too.
Such an “alliance” makes total sense, considering that the technological focus now – driverless cars, security systems – needs such solutions together. As ARM CEO Simon Segars says, they “rely on the creation of dedicated image computing solutions and Apical’s technologies will play a crucial role in their delivery”.
But what does Apical gain? Important contracts, given ARM’s influence and reputation. Apical products will be “driving value for its partners as they push deeper into markets where visual computing will deliver a transformation in device capabilities and the way humans interact with machines.”, stated Michael Tusch, CEO Apical.
