EVE Online is an MMORPG released in 2003, yet still holds a passionate fanbase thanks to the game’s complexity and scale. Essentially since its release, fans of the game congregate at EVE Online’s Annual Fanfest in mutual appreciation and dedication of the game. Unfortunately, developers CCP Games announced EVE Online’s Fanfest would be cancelled this year.
According to a report by Kotaku, CCP stated that the company felt obligated to cancel to event for the safety and health of attendees and the public. CCP’s statement falls in line with many other cancellations happening recently, from MWC Barcelona to GDC. Not only that, companies have been dropping out of events that are still happening (like Sony did at PAX East).
The lasting effects COVID-19 will have on the world and the gaming industry are yet to be seen. Moves like that of CCP are vital in maintaining safety and health of all involved.
