Facebook has now launched a petitions feature dubbed Community Actions, which will allow the users to notify the local officials of their thoughts and what changes they would like to see in the community, or what they are worried about.
With the feature, the users will be able to create a petition and tag the public officials connected to it and also get their friends to support whatever cause they’re passionate about. The page will allow the petition creators to discuss the topic with others but also create events and fundraisers for it as well.
While you’ll be able to see the number of people who have backed a certain petition, you’ll only be able to see the names of friends or the public figures that have been tagged or are otherwise involved.
Facebook is also well-aware that the feature might be targeted for abuse – that’s why it hopes that a good, healthy mix of algorithm detection and user reports will keep the feature somewhat safe from offensive petitions.
While the feature might offer an easy way to people to make their voices heard, there is no guarantee that, people being people, the discourse will not turn toxic, but here’s hoping for the best.
The feature is currently being rolled out all across U.S but not everyone will gain access to it right away, so if you’re eager to try and make a difference, you’ll have to be patient.
