The most awe-inspiring tech moment of 2018 was definitely the Google Duplex project when Google Assistant made a phone call to a hair salon and sounded so convincingly human that the salon’s employee did not realize they were talking to a bot.
That happened at the Google I/O 2018 keynote back in May and now Google Duplex is rolling out to Pixel users.
The artificial intelligence call service is now being deployed to a “small group” of Pixel owners in a few “select cities” according to a VentureBeat report. Google Duplex has also been available for limited beta testing since this summer but few have managed to land a spot and enjoy the amazing conversational AI that can make appointments for you.
Now, it’s getting really close to a full launch.
“We’re currently ramping up the ability to book restaurant reservations through the Google Assistant over the phone using Duplex technology … To help deliver a good experience to Pixel users and to businesses, we’re starting with a slow rollout,” said a Google rep. As the company previously announced, Google Duplex will first come to select Pixel 3 owners in cities like Atlanta, San Francisco, and New York.
That probably means a full roll-out to Android devices is still a few months down the line but still, Google is moving pretty fast.
Something tells us 2019 is going to be very busy for restaurants and other service providers.
