The smart search Google Lens provides is now available to OnePlus 6 users and more. The update to the phone’s camera app was spotted just this week.
Android Police reported having seen Google Lens work within the OnePlus camera app, after it featured with the Android P Developer Preview 2 for the latest OnePlus phone. To make it work, users just have to install the APK (available right now online, but if you want to go by the book, you will have to wait for the next OTA).
Once the APK is installed, the native camera app will show the Google Lens shortcut in the camera modes menu. As you know, Google Lens is a tool that does real-time search after pointing the camera towards different objects, identifying the things “seen”.
One of the latest updates Google made to its software was the added ability to recognize dog breeds. The news came as the whole world was celebrating National Pet Day.
Will Google Lens work if you have an older OnePlus phone? Indeed, since the feature comes as an APK not as a software update.
If you have a different Android phone, there’s still hope. Google said that Motorola, LG, HMD Global (Nokia), Asus and Xiaomi are amongst the manufacturers that will feature it in future devices.
We’ll find out more next week, at Mobile World Congress Shanghai, where these phone makers and more will definitely try to steal the spotlight.
