According to a 2020 report from Apple Insider, the future iPhone could have an in-screen fingerprint sensor as an additional feature. The under-display optical Apple Touch ID is being tested which would give users another alternative for unlocking their iPhone.
This has also been recently confirmed by Bloomberg and by Wall Street Journal, with the former claiming that a new optical fingerprint scanner might be featured in this year’s iPhone along with Face ID.

Such claims have been circulating for several years while Apple’s iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone Pro Max excluding the feature in favor of Face ID. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned back in August 2019 that Apple is planning to release an iPhone with both Face ID and under-screen Touch ID in 2021.
The leaker L0vetodream also tweeted that in-screen Touch ID will soon be added to future iPhone models.
In other words “MESA” means Touch ID and “uts” is short for “under the screen”. The basic touch ID is currently used in the iPhone SE, iPad, and MacBooks.
