After major (seemingly credible) cutscenes and game play aspects leaked from the Last of Us Part II yesterday, Sony and Naughty Dog had to make a statement. Earlier today, PlayStation announced the new release date for the Last of Us Part II and, subsequently, Ghost of Tsushima.
In a PlayStation blog post, Head of Worldwide Studios of Sony Interactive Entertainment Hermen Hulst confirmed that the Last of Us Part II will release on June 19th and Ghost of Tsushima July 17th. To note, Ghost of Tsushima was originally slated to release in June, but was likely pushed back to give the Last of Us Part II some space.
It is not confirmed that these leaks had anything to do with the announced release date for the Last of Us Part II. The post states that “the ease in the global distribution environment” allowed for the games to release when they are, but it’s hard not to see the leaks as affecting the company’s strategy.
Although the release of a title like the Last of Us Part II would usually be marked with celebration, Naughty Dog is certainly reeling from the leaks. Although reports have noted the intense crunch developers had to go through, it is unfortunate that their vision and work were not released on their timeline.
