You might remember a while ago that rumors about Motorola working on a foldable phone resembling the RAZR were floating about.

They all quieted down for a couple of weeks but, in a recent interview with Engadget, Motorola VP of Global Product Dan Dery confirmed that the company has been working on foldable phones for years.

The company plans to launch the device no “later than everybody else in the market” and, considering pretty much everyone who is someone on the market has been announcing foldable phones left and right these days, it means that Motorola will most likely take to launching its own at the latest, sometime in the middle of 2019.

Motorola usually holds its events in August so we’ll probably get to see the foldable handset around then.

In the interview, Dery confirms that the future design will not have a tablet-like screen and some of you might remember that a patent Motorola filed a while ago showed a horizontal folding mechanism in the style of the RAZR flip phone.

Dery has also confirmed that the company is not looking at just one design, on the contrary, it’s exploring different options and one of them is a screen that could fold twice. The idea behind all this folding is to avoid scratching or damaging the display in any way.

“We have been testing a plastic OLED device with plastic film on top,” Dan Dery said to EngadgetThe fact that you’re touching [that kind of display] with your nails is scratching it. It has a short life right away; it starts dying the day you unpack it. But it’s beautiful. That first day, it’s beautiful.”

According to Dey, Motorola has discarded a number of foldable phone ideas over the years but it’s clear that the company is working hard to deliver a foldable phone unlike any other and now that we know all this, we’re quite excited to see it.
