After so many rumors about the OnePlus 6T, no one could have expected the announcement of OnePlus TV.
Pete Lau, the OnePlus CEO and founder, told Business Insider that his company is now also planning a OnePlus TV. The announcement was also backed by a blog post in which the same Pete Lau did manage to get us excited about the company’s step forward.
“We feel the current market of TVs is still feeling quite traditional in their functionality and experience. And they haven’t really well-integrated the internet … making the experience match with what would be expected in today’s connected society,” said Lau.
However, since OnePlus has only been active in the smartphone area so far, the CEO also tried to temper expectations a bit. While he said that OnePlus TV will indeed be a premium flagship TV with plenty of AI to achieve a better compatibility with smartphones, “it won’t be something that’s perfect and absolutely complete and revolutionary from the start.”
What we do know is that the company wants to let you simply pair your smartphone to your TV, eliminating the need for clunky third-party apps and services and that the OnePlus TV will also have an embedded camera. Since privacy has been a hot topic lately, Pete Lau was also quick to reassure OnePlus fans that the company is aware of the risks of having a TV with a camera and that it will have a “solution” for those privacy issues.
As far as the AI goes, it’s a safe bet to say a smart assistant will be present in the OnePlus TV but whether that will be Google Assistant, Alexa or a OnePlus-made assistant is still up in the air.
