Sony has announced its latest addition to the RX series of compact cameras yesterday: the RX100 VII (model model DSC-RX100M7), which uses the technologies the company previously only made available on the Alpha 9 camera.

The RX100 VII sets a new standard for performance in compact cameras,” Neal Manowitz, deputy president of Imaging Products and Solutions at Sony Electronics has said of the model in the official press release. “Sony will continue to drive innovation in the world of imaging, constantly pushing to empower creators with the most capable tools that allow them to realize their vision, and create like they have never been able to before.”

The camera is being presented as a high-performance option for both photography and video shooting.

To begin with, the RX100 VII is powered up by a 1.0-type stacked 20.1 MP Exmor RS CMOS image sensor paired up with the latest BIONZX image processor. This combination delivers an autofocus and speed performance which Sony states “has never before been seen available on a compact camera”.

The zoom lens that allows the camera to be flexible when shooting is a ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T 24-200mm F2.8-4.5, which is fit for both the amateur photographer as well as for the professional one.

The list of what the camera offers is quite long and it includes 357 focal-plane phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points and, according to Sony, the world’s fastest 0.02 sec AF acquisition time.

The compact camera also offers advanced Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF capabilities. Real-time Tracking allows the users to capture their subjects with accuracy even when using the touch panel on the rear screen – this ability was fine tuned by using the company’s latest algorithm which includes an AI-based object recognition feature.

Real-time Eye AF uses this AI feature as well: it allows it to process all the eye data in real time, which allows the users improved accuracy, speed and tracking for any type of subjects. By using this feature, the users can focus on the overall composition of the shot they’re working on.

The camera is also lightweight, at only 302g and measurements of 102mm x 58mm x 43mm but, in spite of its size, it can shoot in 4K with no binning, it can make time-lapse videos via Interval Shooting and is also capable of Super Slow Motion recordings at up to 960fps.

Other features include a flip-up display, pop-up electronic viewfinder as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

The RX100 VII will become available in August, with a price tag of $1,200.

There’s also a Shooting Grip Kit you can add to the camera, which will cost $1,300 and an LCJ-RXK jacket case that will sell for $85. Both products are expected to make an appearance on the market sometime later this year.
