An unopened copy of Super Mario Bros for the NES has just broke records for the most expensive video game sold at a whopping $2 million.

According to The New York Times (via The Verge), rather than being sold to a buyer at an auction, this sale was done through an asset collection site called Rally. This company buys collectible items like games but transfers ownership to its members through a stock-like system. That is, members own a portion of the item and vote to decide whether to sell it to someone who offers.

Rally reportedly bought the game for $140,000 last April and held it in its possession before this sale

The previous record was set about a month ago when a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 sold for $1.56 million. Before that it was a copy of The Legend of Zelda for the NES sold for $870,000.
