The highly anticipated Future of Gaming event for the PlayStation 5 did not disappoint. Starting off with a montage of the incredible titles like God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us and Persona 5, Sony reminded the viewers that PlayStation has a legacy of creating great gaming experiences. But they quickly turned their eye to the future of gaming as they launched straight into reveal after reveal.
Here are some of the most exciting games announced:
Project Athia
A project collaboration between Square Enix and Luminous Productions, an unknown hero traverses an open and mythical world. What stood out about Project Athia was its gorgeous open world as well as hints of magical and fantastical elements. It currently stands as just a project, but as it is produced and developed Luminous Productions and Square Enix (developers of the Final Fantasy series), this game certainly looks like it’ll be incredible.
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Almost out of nowhere, LittleBigPlanet is back! The puzzle platformer was a fan favorite, but no word on the series has come out since LittleBigPlanet 3 released in 2014. Sackboy: A Big Adventure brings back the series in a 3D platformer with what looks to be up to four-person multiplayer.
Resident Evil Village
The eight entry into the mainline Resident Evil series dropped near the end of the presentation. Set to release Holiday 2021, the premise of the game seems to rest on the idea of a haunted forest/village. Although not much else was mentioned, it’s still exciting to see Capcom develop a new entry rather than a remake.
Horizon Forbidden West
Capping off the gameplay portion of the presentation, PlayStation and Guerilla Games presented a quick cinematic trailer for the second entry into the Horizon series: Horizon Forbidden West. In this entry, the protagonist will move West to a “far future America.”
Perhaps most exciting was how much better the game looks when compared to the original. The glimpses of the Golden Gate Bridge in ruins, the updated graphics of machines like the Snapmaw and new elephant like machines, underwater exploration, and the more expansive world truly demonstrated the power and potential of the PlayStation 5.
The Rest
Most of the following games only had cinematic trailers and not much information yet. That does not diminish just how exciting it is to see, for example, a Spider-Man game based around Miles Morales. Here are the remainder of the games announced:
- Grand Theft Auto 5, enhanced and expanded for the PS5 (2021)
