The Last of Us Part II came out last Friday and although highly anticipated, it release was not without controversy. Despite all this, the game has come out strong, breaking physical sales records in the UK.
According to GameSpot, The Last of Us Part II has become “the UK’s top-selling title of all time over its first week in terms of boxed sales alone.” The previous holder was Naughty Dog’s other major title, Uncharted 4. The previous best-selling game in its first week in 2020 was Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Impressive in its own way, this does not account for digital sales. Digital sales have been on the rise in recent years and have only accelerated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a report by Sony, it said it had sold two-thirds (66%) of its games digitally.
We won’t know official numbers until another report from Sony. However, the fact that The Last of Us Part II has already broken records is an incredible feat in its own right.
