The Revival of a Genre Almost Gone? EA’s Immortals Of Aveum Is A Single-Player Shooter…And Fantasy, Not Scifi

Single-player shooters have steadily declined in popularity over the past few years, particularly with big publishers all going for multiplayer and free-to-play titles, but Electronic Arts is betting big on one.

EA revealed Immortals of Aveum, a single-player first person magic shooter. Yes, magic shooter – a rare thing indeed.

Just like it says on the tin, this is a first person shooter you won’t use guns in but instead blast enemies with spells.

Even though it’s rare to see single-player games and fantasy games in general nowadays, that novelty factor seems to be the only thing Immortals of Aveum has going for it.

The first Immortals of Aveum trailer does present some tantalizing gameplay concepts but the dialogue sounds exactly like ChatGPT trained on 90s pulpy fantasy books – or inspired by Amazon’s Wheel of Time.

Since it’s a single-player game and the main selling point of those is a good story, hopefully it’s just a case of a vague trailer and not representative of the final game.

Immortals of Aveum launches on July 20th and here is the official synopsis:

Players experience this visceral and cinematic, story-driven game through the eyes of Jak, as he joins an elite order of battlemages, masters all three colors of magic – blue, green, and red – and decimates legions of enemies with clever chained attacks and well-timed counters. Combining a modern story within a fantasy setting, the world of Aveum is filled with unforgettable characters, fast-paced action and spell-based combat that defies FPS conventions.
