The glory days of family Netflix accounts shared among dozens of friends and exes are almost over!
Netflix password-sharing is under attack, as the streaming service started cracking down on those who use other people’s accounts.
As part of a test designed to cut down on shared accounts, Netflix sent a lot of people emails asking them to sign up for “your own Netflix for free today”.
Even though Netflix removed free trials last year and replaced them with free upgrades to larger plans, the company is enticing those sharing Netflix accounts with a 30 day trial period.
The mail sent by Netflix prompted users to sign up for a Netflix trial and told them that “if you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.”
As TheStreamable points out, Netflix’s terms of use have stated for a while now that only members of your household can share your account but you know from experience that the rule in question was pretty lax.
Now, as Netflix starts preparing to boot some people from shared Netflix accounts, you should probably find a new way to watch their content.
After all, according to this survey aptly titled “Americans Mooching Streaming Accounts”, a whopping 4 in 10 people use other friends’ login to stream Netflix stuff.
Furthermore, about a third do so without permission from the account holder. Oops!
