Reggie Fils-Aimé Joins GameStop Board of Directors

PC: Nintendo

When former Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aimé retired from his position, the gaming world shook a little. Reggie had been at Nintendo’s helm through the popularity of the Wii, the missteps of the Wii U and the Switch’s innovation, guiding the company through thick and thin. Yet, it looks like retirement is short for the gaming icon as it has just been announced that he will join the Board of Directors at GameStop.

Where it once stood as the center of the gaming market, GameStop has taken a tumble in recent days. From the controversy surrounding pressure to sell to its inability to match changing digital download markets thanks to a reliance on selling used games (see more here), GameStop locations around the country have been closing and stock prices have fallen dramatically. Trying to keep up with the market, GameStop has started selling more game-related merchandise and turning some of its stores into interactive experiences where gamers. It is unclear if that latter will become a model for the future.

The personality around Reggie, as evidenced by the many memes – “my body is ready” – as well as the Nintendo Directs, could serve GameStop well as they try to keep up with a growing digital marketplace. Reggie himself seems excited, highlighting the change on his Twitter account. Comments are generally positive or surprised, noting the optimism they see in Reggie taking the role.

GameStop has a long way to go to get back to where it once was. Adding Reggie to the Board of Directors is a step forward, but we’ll have to wait and see if GameStop can turn the ship around.
