Today, Samsung announced the arrival of its latest flagships – the Galaxy S21, S21 Plus, and S21 Ultra. After years of raising prices every time it launched a smartphone, the S21 and S21 Plus will cost $200 less than the previous generation. The new series can be preordered and shipping will start on January 29.
It looks like Samsung is aiming for a budget-friendly flagship experience when it comes to the S21 and S21 Plus. The Galaxy S21 Ultra, on the other hand, is as premium as it gets, but is also priced to match its features.
In order to lower the price of the Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus, Samsung made some significant changes since last year’s models. The company switched from the curved edges to a flat panel, reducing the screen’s resolution from 3200 x 1440 to a more modest 2400 x 1080. Both handsets still have 120Hz refresh rates, although it’s dynamically adjusted now. The RAM has also been dropped from 12GB to 8GB.
Confirming last month’s specs leak, both phones will run on the latest chip from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 888 in North America, and the Exynos 2100 in Europe and other territories.
Like Apple, Samsung removed the power adaptor and headphones from the box for environmental reasons.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra is what really stands out here. Priced at $1,199,(without the S Pen stylus) it looks like Samsung didn’t cut any corners on the specs. The smartphone packs a 6.8-inch 3200 x 1440 OLED display, with refresh rates up to 120Hz (a refresh rate the S21 Ultra can hit at full resolution, unlike last year). There’s 12GB of RAM, a 5,000mAh battery, up to 512GB of storage, and Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 888 processor.
The main feature of the camera setup on the S21 Ultra is the 108-megapixel sensor and 100x zoom mode, which promises to take photography “to the next level”. There’s a main 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, and two 10-megapixel telephoto cameras: one with a 3X zoom and one with 10X zoom, making the camera panel larger than the previous model.
