After Facebook was banned in Russia, another social media platform is close to shutting down as well.
Tiktok announced that they will suspend all new video content from Russia, stopping Russians from both uploading videos and streaming live.
The move is not part of the companies boycotting Russia over its Ukraine invasion but a way to comply with Russia’s new “fake news” law.
On Friday, President Vladimir Putin signed a new law which bans “fake news” about the military, including calling their Ukraine invasion an invasion. Transgressions face a 15-year prison sentence.
Because Tiktok is one of the top social media platforms in the world and a lot of Russians used it to communicate about the war, the company had no way to police its content there other than simply shutting it down.
From now on, Russian Tiktok users can only use in-app messaging.
“In light of Russia’s new ‘fake news’ law, we have no choice but to suspend live streaming and new content to our video service while we review the safety implications of this law,” posted the official @Tiktokcomms account.
