Sony has finally revealed the third camera in its successful A7R series. The camera is everything we hoped it would be and more since it borrows plenty of features from the A9, but not the steep price #fotomagic
Sony A7R III sports a full-frame 42.4MP sensor and shoots 10fps with autofocus tracking, no shutter blackout in sight – just like the A9 does. This put a smile on my face since any user should enjoy the camera’s beautiful 3.69 million-dot EVF , the same as the one on A9. This time around, the camera works twice as fast in low light situations, thanks to a great combo of 300 PDAF points and 425 contrast AF points.
Sony was generous with the ISO range, putting it in the 100-32000 interval, expendable up to 102,400. The company updated the BIONZ X processor, while making sure the camera can support the extra effort with a high capacity battery (the same as the one found on A9). The series of similarities continue with the joystick, identical to the one present on A9.
When it comes to recording, Sony A7R III can shoot in 4K at 24/30fps and in 1080p at 120 fps. You can rely on 5-axis image stabilization and up to 15 stops of dynamic range.
With a $3,200 price tag, set to launch in November, this mirrorless camera is certainly cheaper than the A9 (which retails for around $4,500) and even Canon 5D Mark IV, making it a worthy competitor. In fact, Canon should take a page from Sony’s book; the latter has managed to launch more than 5 cameras in four years (A7, A7 II, A7R, A7S and updates…), while Canon was stuck developing the successor to Mark III.
