Apple is in hot water right about now, because someone uploaded on GitHub the iPhone Source code, a leak of historical proportions. Rumors are always surrounding Apple products but, so far, there has not been an incident like this, with the proprietary code posted online.
The iPhone code posted on Github is called iBoot and is responsible for ensuring trusted boot operation of Apple iOS software, kind of like a BIOS for the phone.
Fortunately for Apple, the code was for iOS 9, with parts of it still being used in iOS 11.
Apple has already issued a takedown notice for the Github leak and they complied.
In a Tech Crunch statement, the company had this to say:
“Old source code from three years ago appears to have been leaked but by design, the security of our products doesn’t depend on the secrecy of our source code. There are many layers of hardware and software protections built into our products.”
According to experts, users have nothing to fear, because Apple has indeed revamped its security so much that even the jailbreaking community hasn’t managed to crack newer devices.
“Apple does not use security through obscurity, so this does not contain anything risky, just an easier to read format for the bootloader code. It’s all cryptographically signed on end-user devices, there is no way to really use any of the contents here maliciously or otherwise,” said security researcher Will Strafach.
