Ready Player One Premieres At SXSW With DTS:X

Steven Spielberg did it again! His latest movie Ready Player One is about to become a huge success as it brings about the most immersive experience you could imagine thanks to its visual and sound quality. South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival attendees had a chance to be one of the first to see the movie. #realitymagic

The hype for Ready Player One began last year, when the official trailer of the movie debuted. It showed a dystopian society where the only form of entertainment and escape from the barren, real world is in a virtual world named OASIS. The protagonists, in an attempt to find a secret Easter Egg hidden by the creator of the OASIS James Halliday, discovers more about virtual reality (VR) than he could have imagined. What begins as a quest to inherit the founder’s vast fortune turns into something more.

The visual and sound effects of the movie are extremely immersive. Last year, HTC and Warner Bros. paired up to bring this experience to the screen and to VR headsets, so it only makes sense that the visual effects are outstanding. For those watching in a movie theater, Ready Player One will with the embodiment of immersive sound, DTS:X audio. This audio solution comes in some of Spielberg’s other movies, like Jurassic Park, and given the nature of the film, the collaboration was only natural.

The excitement around VR was palpable not only in the movie theater, but at other exhibits at SXSW. “Many exhibitors showcased their latest projects through immersive installations (Westworld built an entire theme park), while others (with smaller budgets) used VR to demonstrate their immersive worlds,” Yue Xu, Tech The Lead’s correspondent, said of the VR at the festival.

The movie will play in theaters around the world this March 29, but be prepared for some long lines as “people lined up 5 hours ahead of time” to see the premiere at SXSW.

Interesting fact – VR was also mentioned in the context of social responsibility. The lines between the virtual world and the real world were blurred in Ready Player One. This begs the question: how would you use virtual reality to make this world a better place?
