SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy just won a huge, $130 million contract for the actual Air Force in order to deliver the Air Force Space Command-52 satellite to its intended mission.
“The competitive award of this EELV launch service contract directly supports Space and Missile Systems Center’s (SMC) mission of delivering resilient and affordable space capabilities to our Nation while maintaining assured access to space,” said Lt. Gen. John Thompson, Air Force program executive officer for Space and SMC commander.

Scheduled for September 2020, the mission will see the Falcon Heavy taking off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
As CNN points out, only two proposals were submitted for this mission – SpaceX and ULA, a joint project between Boeing and Lockheed Martin. That means that Elon Musk’s strategy of landing military contracts is developing much better than expected. The September 2020 SpaceX mission is the first classified national security payload awarded to the Falcon Heavy.
“SpaceX is honored by the Air Force’s selection of Falcon Heavy to launch the competitively-awarded AFSPC-52 mission,” stated SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell.
