When it comes to humans vs AI the headlines usually spell doom and gloom, especially in the gaming area, where top players around the world find themselves beaten to a pulp by artificial intelligence.

However, bucking the odds and postponing Skynet by just one more day, a team of human pro gamers managed to defeat Google-backed OpenAI at the International, the biggest Dota 2 tournament in the world.

It was a tough victory to achieve since OpenAI managed to win some key objectives but fortunately the AI’s penchant for being extra aggressive brought it to its eventual doom. Fixated on killing Roshan, one of the major goals of a Dota 2 match, OpenAI sometimes forgot to defend its own base, which let the human players from the South American team Pain Gaming catch up and eventually securing a victory.

As one researcher pointed out, while OpenAI is extremely scary when applied to video games, it’s still not smart enough yet.

Open AI’s developers enjoyed the challenge and took the loss as champions, though they’ll probably back for a rematch soon enough. Until then, watch OpenAI and humans square off at The International below.
