With just one day remaining before Black Friday, Amazon has suffered a massive data breach that exposed not only customer names but also their email addresses, causing them to appear on the website.

According to Amazon, the problem is not a security breach but merely a technical error  – the customers who have been affected by it have been informed and the issue has already been fixed.

The email sent to the customers informed them of the following:

“Our website inadvertently disclosed your email address or name and email address due to a technical error. The issue has been fixed. This is not a result of anything you have done, and there is no need for you to change your password or take any other action. The impacted customers have been contacted.”

“Amazon takes all security-related matters very seriously and your account security is our top priority. We have policies and security measures in place to ensure that your personal information remains secure.”

Even so, Amazon has not been very open about what exactly caused the breach and just how many customers have been affected by it.

While it might not sound like much – just names and email addresses, no card or password information – cyber-criminals can still do a lot of damage with just those details alone so if you are one of the people who has been affected by the breach, it’s advisable you change your password, just in case.
