Facebook said that it would be looking into rolling out dark mode for its Messenger app back in October 2018 and it looks like it’s finally keeping to its word.
As spotted by an user on Reddit, you can now enable Dark Mode in the app in a hidden way, as there is not feature for it by default – at least not at the moment, since the feature is still undergoing tests.
All you have to do is send the half-moon emoji to someone (or yourself). Once you do that, many moons will start flowing across your screen and then you should see a message at the top of the chat window saying that “you found Dark mode!”. All you need to do is tap the message to access the feature.
If it doesn’t work, you can force quit the app and try again. Even so, most iPhone users haven’t been able to access it, at least not at the time this article is being written.
Beware that this is a true Dark Mode – the design is not a dark grey at all, but pure black. That means that not only will your eyes get some rest, especially if you use the app at night, but your battery will get a well-deserved respite as well.
