Smartphone addiction is one of the biggest warnings posed by mental health specialists around the globe so certain smartphones have taken the challenge of curbing this addiction while still being a compelling device. Meet the BllocZero18, an extremely minimalistic piece of hardware that balances utility and functionality.
Created by German startup Blloc, the BllocZero18 is based on Android 8.1 but replaces all the colorful, attention-grabbing interface elements with a simpler, black and white environment. Blloc calls this interface “Root” and manages to integrate all of the most popular apps in a single timeline format, trying to minimize the need to jump from app to app or multitask.
Color options are still available for apps like Instagram. Whenever the user keeps their finger on the fingerprint reader on the back, the screen will be in full color. Once they remove the finger, the BllocZero18 goes back to the distraction-free, black and white screen.
On the hardware front, this minimalistic phone settles for some reasonable specs. There’s a 5.5-inch LCD screen with FHD+ resolution, an Helio P23 chipset, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of storage. The phone is powered by a 3,100 mAh battery and has one 13 MP Sony IMX258 Exmor RS camera on the back.
This sleek device comes in a zinc alloy frame and has front and back glass panels. To compensate for that extra-fragility, Blloc has a generous 12-month warranty that will cover repairs or replacements in case of broken displays, short circuits, liquid spills and all kinds of other damage.
The BllocZero18 is already available on their website for 359 euros / $418. It truly provides you everything you need and expect in a smartphone, but without the distractions.
