After several coverage experiments with drones, CNN has decided to launch a drone division. The television network will send UAVs to capture footage for their best stories #actionmagic
CNN Air Division will be comprised of two UAVs, both with full-time operators. Drones’ responsibilities will be to capture aerial scenes for the network and parent companies, Turner Broadcasting and Time Warner. “CNN’s cutting-edge development of technology to enhance the way we tell stories is a part of our DNA,” said Terence Burke, senior vice president of National News. “We are proud to continue the tradition with CNN Air, and to establish a unit that will expand our technological capabilities for news gathering.”
How come the Federal Aviation Administration is allowing drone reporting? Well, the FAA actually selected CNN as one of three companies allowed to research safe methods to use them in journalistic efforts. They have since reported in such manner from the Louisiana flooding and the water crisis in Michigan.
That said, the FAA has imposed a couple of rules for the drone division. CNN’s operators have to oversee the UAVs at all times during flight and the drones can’t fly over people. Sounds pretty reasonable to us!
