Given Cyberpunk 2077’s delay, fans may have wondered whether the games would be compatible on next-generation consoles. If you have that worry, don’t worry. Developers CD Projekt Red have confirmed that the game will be compatible with next-generation consoles.

In a tweet from the official Cyberpunk 2077 account, CD Projekt Red stated that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Cyberpunk 2077 will work on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles on launch. A follow-up tweet noted that they will provide a free update later to both versions of the game so the games can be optimized for next-generation consoles.

Although this is not new news for Xbox owners given CD Projekt Red’s buy-in to Xbox’s Smart Delivery feature, it certainly is good news for PlayStation owners. Sony has not created a universal system like Xbox, but instead said it would support developers who choose to go that route. Known for being consumer friendly, CD Projekt Red certainly is maintaining that legacy with this free update for both PlayStation and Xbox players.

While we speculated that the delay could lead it to being a launch title for one or both the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5, the free upgrade (potentially) indicates that the game won’t be ready for the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X on launch. Either that or the upgrade itself won’t be ready.

Either way, Cyberpunk 2077 is still just around the corner and will be an exciting game to play, both on current and next generation consoles.
