An alarming Quartz report was just confirmed by Facebook itself: Facebook Messenger will get auto-playing video ads in its app.
Ads in Facebook Messenger are nothing new, having been present in the app since last summer, but, apparently, basic photos were not enough.

Soon enough, you’ll see videos as soon as you scroll through your messages and they will automatically start playing in order to catch your eye. Of course, Facebook is pitching this as a pleasant experience for its users.
“We will be rolling out video ads gradually and thoughtfully. People that use Messenger each month are our top priority and they will remain in control of their experience,” Facebook told Quartz in a statement.

In any case, expect to be able to filter your ads just like in Newsfeed, as there’s a slim chance Facebook will allow you to hide them completely. After all, Facebook keeps bragging about the success of the platform.
“By the end of 2018, 78% of the world’s smartphone users will message every month. And the growth is only expected to continue: By 2021, it’s predicted that the global user base for mobile messaging apps will have risen by a further 23%,” states a Facebook for advertisers page.
