After a year in which beloved properties were shuffled around and HBO’s fate hung in the balance, Warner Bros Discovery has made another victim.
WBD just shut down Rooster Teeth. The pioneering media company with legendary gaming content will close after 21 years.
Fortunately, some Rooster-Teeth affiliated things survive the cut for now.
The Roost Podcast Network will remain in operation “while WBD evaluates outside interest in acquiring this growing asset,” said Jordan Levin, the general manager of Rooster Teeth in the internal memo that announced the shutdown.
Levin blamed “fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising, and patronage” for the closure of Rooster Teeth.
As Deadline reports, Rooster Teeth had tried to find ways to earn money outside of platforms like YouTube, where the algorithm is finicky, and moved their content to their own website last year.
However, that wasn’t enough and, as Levi said, Rooster Teeth joins many others in closing their doors.
“Monetization shifts, platform algorithms, advertising challenges, and the ebb and flow of patronage—all these converging factors have led to many closures in the industry,” he wrote in the memo, which you can read in its entirety on Deadline.
Notably, Vice Media also shut down this month.
