Facebook Is Finally Merging Messenger With Instagram Chat Services

Facebook has started integrating Instagram’s chat feature with Messenger, as part of a bigger project to merge all of the social network’s messaging services.

Mark Zuckerberg announced last year his plans for integrating all of the companies messaging platforms – Messenger, Whatsapp, and Instagram. A spokesman said back in 2019: “We’re working on making more of our messaging products end-to-end encrypted and considering ways to make it easier to reach friends and family across networksAs you would expect, there is a lot of discussion and debate as we begin the long process of figuring out all the details of how this will work.”

A year later, things started moving in the direction Zuckerberg planned, as The Verge reported. Some users across the US received an update message upon opening the Instagram app saying “There’s a New Way to Message on Instagram”.

Once updated, the DM icon on the top right of the screen will be replaced by the Facebook Messenger logo. Instagram and Messenger conversations will then all appear in the same place, each one being colored with either purple or blue. Though, messaging people on Facebook from Instagram is still not possible, at least for now.

A Facebook spokesman told The Verge:  “A small set of people were able to update to a new test experience for Instagram messaging. We hope they enjoy the experience and we are looking forward to testing it in other countries so we can keep learning from this.”

It will be interesting to see how Facebook will manage to integrate all its chat services into one, and how we as users will find the change.
