The IBM Model M is arguably the most famous keyboard in the world but oldschool computing fans will also be familiar with the IBM Model F. That’s an even earlier model than the Model M, which launched in 1985, and appeared alongside the IBM 3161 in 1985.
Now, there are new full size IBM Model F keyboards available on the market – and you can see them in action below.

As someone who also rescued an IBM Model M back when people threw them away in the 90s and 2000s, it’s incredible to see that they’re now appreciated. If it weren’t for the Model M, which got me obsessed with “clicky keys”, I’d probably have saved thousands of dollars in my lifetime by buying regular membrane keyboards like most people.
And that brings us to the bad news: the new model F keyboards start at about $355.
However, the makers do underline that “now you can save over 50% from what they cost originally in 1984, adjusted for inflation,” which makes the price tag somewhat more palatable.
Of course, if you’re into mechanical keyboards already, the price of a Model F won’t register as a shock, since this is one expensive hobby – and they even offer split keyboards!
Though really, as my colleague explained in this guide, it doesn’t have to be that expensive…
