Fossil was hard at work updating its Gen 5 Wear OS smartwatches with some serious features.
Usually, it’s when Google updates Wear OS that you get new features but this time the smartwatch makers themselves got on the job.
The new Fossil Gen 5 Wear OS update adds VO2 max tracking and sleep tracking, a feature long requested, as until now you had to download third party sleep tracking apps from Google Play for it.
Even better, Fossil now also lets you create custom profiles for various tasks in order to enable “extended mode”, which lets you optimize battery life for your Fossil smartwatch so that you can go 24 hours on a charge.
There is also an update for the Phone app with a new tile for quick access.
Considering the Fossil Gen 5s run on some older tech, the Snapdragon Wear 3100, it’s nice to see the company making sure the devices can compete with what’s now out on the shelves.
Back in 2019, they were definitely top contenders for the best smartwatches on offer.
In any case, Google is also working on the fall Wear OS update.
That will mainly bring CPU improvements for up to 20 percent faster apps start, plus a better user interface.
