Google Engineer Creates Android Bathroom Mirror

The era of smart home appliances is here. But other than playing with TV, fridge or washing machine displays, we haven’t seen mind-blowing concepts. This one, though, from Google software engineer Max Braun is a pretty neat idea. Instead of brushing your teeth with one hand in the morning, browsing for news on the phone with the other one, why not have all the important Android features displayed on your bathroom mirror?

Braun devised his own smart mirror at home starting with a “two-way mirror, a display panel and controller board, plus a bunch of components and arts & crafts supplies“. With a thin display, embedded in a layer between the mirror and the medicine cabinet door, his creation is not only smart, but also good-looking.

The sleek decorating object above his sink can show date and time, weather, top headlines and even listen to your questions.

Sometime late last year I realized that I wanted my ordinary bathroom mirror to be more like the future we were promised in the movies. There doesn’t seem to be anyone selling the product I was looking for. […] A number of people have done similar custom builds recently but I had something different in mind..

You don’t have to worry about updates, either. Android APIs take care of news and weather – by the way, the UI can change color after the sun. Cool, right?

Braun wants to add traffic info and reminders in the near future, pointing out that it’s “still a work in progress”. We can’t wait to see the final product!
