If you are interested in Google Stadia but haven’t committed to the system yet, this might be a good time to try it out. Not just because many of us are staying at home, but also because Google is now offering two free months of their Stadia Pro membership.
According to Engadget, this offer will be available in 14 countries – “US, UK, Canada, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland” – and will not require the Stadia-specific controller. Instead, accessing the Stadia library is as simple as using the Google Stadia-specific app with any USB controller or keyboard/mouse. Current Google Stadia Pro members will receive the next two months of their subscription free of charge as well.
In a statement on Google Stadia’s blog, Vice President of Google Phil Harrison expressed sympathy for the world in this time of crisis while reiterating the importance of gaming platforms like Google Stadia: “Keeping social distance is vital, but staying home for long periods can be difficult and feel isolating. Video games can be a valuable way to socialize with friends and family when you’re stuck at home.” This sentiment seems to be the core to Google’s motivation to provide these months of free service.
It should be noted that Google, like Sony, recognizes the load on the internet caused by multiple people online at once. In a move to alleviate this burden, Google Stadia games will be streamed by default in 1080p rather than 4k. However, it sounds like you can manually change it back to 4k.
It should be noted that this is a subscription service and like free trials on other services, monthly payments will be required to continue accessing Stadia.
