If the title of this article made you think about the 1982 TV series Knight Rider, I regret to inform you you’ll have to wait for a while longer until you get to have your very own, intelligent talking car. That said, perhaps we’re not that far away from the sentient car future we dream of.

Honda recently joined forces with SoundHound Inc., a company that deals in voice-enabled AI and conversational intelligence technologies. Together, they want to accelerate the development of a voice-enabled AI assistant for the Honda cars.

SoundHound’s Houndify platform will be providing voice AI to the Honda drivers and will be “supporting highly sophisticated and natural interactions with speed and accuracy” as both companies aim for an AI that can easily understand natural and conversational voice commands, even ones that depend on details such as a particular location or past requests.

Hyundai and Kia also benefit from the SoundHound tech for their own assistants but Honda will be able to customize the experience so, even if the automakers use the same platform, the final product will most likely be nothing alike.

We all know that in-car assistants are not very distinguished, so to speak, but perhaps Honda will make a difference and deliver something uniquely theirs, once the AI work begins.
