The rumor mill indicated we’d see the Mate 20 Pro at IFA this year, but alas, the company went against the current. There was no Mate 20 in sight, but Honor (its sub-brand) Magic 2 took its place.
The sequel to a device released in the winter of 2016 came on the Huawei conference stage and disappeared in the blink of an eye. Indeed, like magic. We were able to see a handset with almost 100% screen-to-body ratio, curved glass display and a slide down feature.
Unlike the Vivo Nex we checked out at MWC Shanghai, this one relies on a slider that has to be dragged down physically to show the camera module.
There’s no notch in sight, but it does come with the newest processor from Huawei, the Kirin 980, also released here, in Berlin. This will add all sorts of AI goodness to the phone once it’s launched.
Right now, there’s reason to believe that will happen two months from now. Will it hit U.S. and Europe stores? Can’t really tell, as Huawei gave us the impression that Magic 2 will be a rare jewel on the market, a niche device to ship in limited quantities.
